They're good!

Now for a report on the rest of the holiday ...

Da liked his lobster claw mittens ...

It's not the best photo, but I'm not sure that he would understand why I needed to take a better one. ("For the log? What log? Oh, you said blog? What's a blog? Oh, on the computer ..."). Rest assured, this is a look of deep appreciation for wooly handknits.

My mom and dad liked the Red Sox Socks. Photos to follow, as I did not take any on Christmas Day.

And, in other knitterly goodness, I got some additions to my library. Mom and Dad got me a subscription to Interweave Knits. They also got me a Sensational Knitted Socks and Barbara Walker's Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The two books were mail ordered, and just arrived today, so I'm going to pick them up at mom and dad's house tomorrow.

Oh, and I also got a gift certificate to one of my LYS's from Mom and Dad, and one of these cute little sheepy tape measures from Santa (I think Mim helped him out with that one!).

What wonderful gifts -- I can't wait to use all of them!

Christmas socks ... in detail, with lots of photos

Over the past weeks, I mentioned a certain pair of socks that I was working on, but gave no details. The socks were a gift for my mother in law (a.k.a. Mim) who sometimes reads this blog. (Hey Mim, if you are out there, did you know that you can leave me comments by clicking on the "comment" link at the bottom of each day's post? I think the directions are easy enough to follow.)

Since all 3 of our other parents -- my mom and dad, and Thom's dad -- were getting handknit gifts, it was only right to knit something for Mim too. She and I went to Webs over Thanksgiving. Under the guise of "seeking her advice" on sock yarn selections, I got her to pick out some sock yarn she liked. She chose Artyarns Ultramerino 4 in color 120, a very subtly variegated teal color.

You can't really see the variegations in the photo, but they will show up better in other pictures...

I printed out lots of sock patterns from the internet, but none were quite what I was looking for. Finally, as Christmas was creeping closer (December 7, to be exact) I found a pattern I liked in the newest issue of Interweave Knits. These socks, called "Embossed Leaves" fit the bill perfectly -- an interesting, lacy pattern, but not so open as to give the wearer cold feet.

I cast on for the first sock shortly thereafter. Usually I knit 2 socks at the same time, but decided not to for this pair. I knew I'd be hustling to finish them in time, and every minute I could knit would help. One sock at a time is more portable for knitting in lines and during short breaks here and there. But, I did knit the two socks in parallel. I'd knit the cuff of one, then the cuff of the other, then the first half of the leg on one, and then on the other, etc. This way, I could keep any shifts in gauge pretty consistent from one foot to the other.

Within a few days, I had one sock halfway down the leg, and the second one through the heel flap.

That's the second sock, posed on a can of pink grapefuit scented Method all purpose wipes. This company has great product packaging design. I bet they never realized that a can of wipes, turned upside down, closely approximates the width of a human calf, ankle, and heel. Of course, neither did I until The Mafia and I got creative with our use of office supplies to pose our gift knitting. See her posts, December 13 and 16, for more examples of such silliness.

Like a busy little bee, I worked away at these socks whenever I had a spare moment. Each pattern repeat (the length of one leaf) took me about an hour per sock, so I figured out my knitting schedule, and planned it out so that I would finish the knitting on Wednesday the 21st, leaving me a couple of days to block and wrap.

All was going well. I worked both socks up through the gussets. I did the foot and toe on the first sock, and laid it out to block.

I do not have fancy sock blockers, so I bent some 20 gauge wire into a roughly sock-shaped loop, slipped the sock over this improvised form, and pinned to a towel. Voila, a sock blocker!

Once dry, the first sock looked fabulous. In the blocking photos, you can start to see the variegation, especially on the sole of the foot.

While this was drying, I started working on the foot of the second sock. By Wednesday night, all that remained was the toe, which I started to work on while waiting in lines at the stores that night. I thought I made some sort of mistake on the star toe, which was a new technique for me, so I stuffed it back in its bag, to figure out when I got home.

Turns out, I had no problem following the instructions for the toe. The problem was much further back ... I worked one decrease round too many at the gusset, and now I was two stitches short on the sole. Another knitter might have just dealt with that and modified the toe shaping. Not me. I could never give a gift -- especially to another knitter -- knowing that there was such an egregious mistake.

So, sock #2 got attached to the ball-winder, and ripped back to the gusset. Yes, some tears were shed.

I ignored the sock for the rest of the night. It was already almost 10:00 pm when I ripped, so the "rest of the night" was not too much longer. Thursday, I hardly had time to look at the sock, as I was busy with other projects. Friday afternoon, I camped out on the couch and finished the second sock around 5:00 pm. It promptly got a wool wash and a trip to the sock blocker. And I got to take a deep breath, as I finished it just in time for a blocking, and could turn my attention to other Christmas projects (assembling a photo album, wrapping gifts, etc.)

By Saturday morning, I had these ...

Here you can see the leaf detail and the toe a little better...

Just before leaving for various family visits, I wrapped up the socks.

What's in the little snowman box? Oh yes, these ...

Some handmade stitch markers. I bought the beads for these before I picked out the yarn ... great coincidence that they are almost the same color as the socks!

While these socks took a little longer than expected (due to some unanticipated ripping and reknitting), I loved the end product. So did Mim! She promptly put them on and wore them for the rest of Christmas morning.

Now, for the project specs:

Yarn: Artyarns Ultramerino 4, color 120

Gauge: about 7.5 sts/in

Needles: The ribbing and the top of the leg was knit on a size 2 Addi Turbo. The bottom of the leg, the heel, and the foot/toe are all on a size 1 Addi Turbo. Magic Loop technique used throughout...

Pattern: Embossed Leaves from winter 05 Interweave Knits

Pattern modifications: worked the heel slightly differently, so that I did not have to cut the yarn. Used a larger needle for the top of the leg for a slightly looser fit. Otherwise, followed the pattern exactly.

I loved the pattern, and would consider knitting it again ... for me!

Two days and counting

Riiiiiiiiiiiiip...

Last night the sock was ripped back to its gusset. I reknit a half an inch or so, and will go into full finishing frenzy mode this afternoon.

In the meantime, I finished the gift bag for my boss last night.

I also wrapped the Sox socks.

And some other presents.

Yes, the tree is bothy tiny and fake. It's from our first apartment, where a full sized live tree would have crowded us out of the house and onto the sidewalk. We got a real tree last year, but were so busy this year that we just put up the little guy. You can also see the vintage-y stocking in the background. I knit it for Thom two years ago, my first Christmas of knitting. It matches mine, which my grandmother knit for me when I was little. Aww.

And, I also got a few gifts at practice last night. Best one? Probably this ...

... because now I don't have to stop and buy white wine to bring on Christmas Day! This one saves me time AND money!!!

Hopefully, I'll have time for one more post tomorrow morning. If not, I may be incomputercado for a few days, as I will be at the in-laws, who have an old computer with slow dial-up service. Happy Holidays!

Three more days, damn it...

Accomplished yesterday:
- Found ribbon (in stash) for boss' gift bag
- Bought gift for seven year old niece -- a long-sleeved white tshirt, a long-sleeved pink tshirt, and a set of fabric paints to decorate the tshirts.
- Bought gift for boss (it involves Valrhona, Scharfenberger, and Republic of Tea ... yum!)
- went to Macy's to buy Clinique products, but they were sold out of gift sets. Pooh.
- figured out novice clinic info.
- finished suit design layouts, at least in theory. Still need to check some of them using actual rhinestones.

Things I did not accomplish ...
- finish hairpiece mockups. I'm happy enough with the paper templates, so I will work on these over the holiday break.
- dub novice synchro video from DVD to VHS. They'll just have to wait until January to see it :)
- finish knitting sock!!!

About the sock ... I finished the whole foot, and started the toe. I just couldn't get it to work quite right. Then, I realized that I was 2 stitches short on the sole. Damn!!!! I worked one gusset decrease round too many. So, I have to rip back to the gusset and reknit the foot. I am going to look one more time before ripping, just to make sure that I properly identified the problem, but I'm 99% sure that this is where I lost the 2 stitches. I know that people will tell me to just leave it alone, that nobody would notice that one sole has 32 stitches while one only has 30. The problem is that I would know it's wrong. The first sock is so beautiful, I want to make sure that the second one is just as good.

So, I have to rip out 3 whole pattern repeats. That will take me about 3 hours to reknit, plus another hour for the toe, I think. If I work REALLY hard tomorrow afternoon, I should be able to reknit it and block it on Friday night, and wrap it Saturday morning.

While the sock was in time-out, I got a jump on tomorrow's to-do list, and started knitting a gift bag for my boss' gift. Here is its current status...

I'm using a skein of recycled sari silk yarn that I got at the MA Sheep and Wool festival last spring. I recycled a ribbon from a gift I received a couple of days ago. The bag is about 4" deep right now, and I need to make it 7" before I close the bottom. I think I am going to work on this at lunch today...

Oh yeah, I also remembered that we were going to give our parents copies of our wedding photo albums for Christmas. We finished the one for my parents a while ago. The one for Thom's parents required extra pages, so I got those last night. I was planning to do this on Friday afternoon. Until the sock fiasco...

So, here's what's on today's list ...
- work full time job, drive to coaching job, coach until 8:30pm
- review hairpiece mockups with head coach.
- Buy gift for seven year old niece??
- block sock #2
- write letter of recommendation (for swimmer applying to private high school) at lunch I'll do this over break too....
- finish knitting boss' gift bag. Wrap gift in bag.
- wrap 4 parent gifts, 2 niece's gifts. Yes, there will be some handmade sock sleeves, not unlike the blanket sleeve I made for a baby blanket gift.

Friday
- work full time job, but only a half day! Yee haw.
- reknit the damn sock...
- buy white wine for xmas
- order rhinestones, sequins, glitter
- shop for any food for holiday. Thom did this one already.
- do laundry
- pack for trip to in-laws' house, including appropriate yarn selections
- finish parent photo album #2
- wrap photo album
- get car washed (perhaps Thom can do this one too...)

Saturday
- wrap one last gift (the damn socks!)
- shop for fruit for breakfast on Xmas morning

Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Four more days!

Accomplished yesterday:
- Finished up through 7 pattern repeats on the gift sock, 1/2 more repeat than planned! (Note to self: Next time you make gift socks, how about plain stockinette legs and feet, ok???)
- pulled together canned goods for charity collection at office xmas party #2
- designed 3 headpieces with coach. Decided the rest can wait until after Christmas.

Accomplished today:
- Found ribbon (in stash) for possible boss' gift bag
- Found new gift idea for seven-year old niece, who now cannot come to First Night. We're going to buy her a plain colored tshirt, a bottle of Gem-Tac, and put together a kit of rhinestones to decorate the tshirt.

Things to do today:
- work full time job
- finish hairpiece mockups. This is a 4-step process -- design concept, create white paper mockup, create colored paper mockup, create craft foam mockup. It sounds excessive, but it's the only way I've found to get the size and shape just right without wasting a lot of craft foam in the process!
- finish suit design layouts -- i.e. decide which sequins, rhinestones, etc. in what designs, for each suit
- finish knitting sock!!!
- buy gift for boss
- find new gift idea for seven-year old niece, who now cannot come to First Night.
- get ribbon for possible boss' gift bag
- dub novice synchro video from DVD to VHS
- figure out novice clinic info
- go to Macy's to buy Clinique products in holiday gift set (they're cheaper that way!)

Thursday
- work full time job, drive to coaching job, coach until 8:30pm
- review hairpiece mockups with head coach. Hopefully home by 10:00pm.
- Buy gift for seven year old niece??
- block sock #2
- write letter of recommendation (for swimmer applying to private high school) at lunch
- if not yet insane, consider knitting a small bag for boss' gift. (perhaps using one of these skeins?
- wrap boss' gift, perhaps in hand knit bag...

Friday
- work full time job, but only a half day! Yee haw.
- buy white wine for xmas
- wrap 4 parent gifts, 2 niece's gifts. Yes, there will be some handmade sock sleeves, not unlike the blanket sleeve I made for a baby blanket gift.
- order rhinestones, sequins, glitter
- shop for any food for holiday
- do laundry
- pack for trip to in-laws' house
- get car washed (perhaps Thom can do this one...)

Five more days

I took this morning off to tackle some of my to-do list. Now it's organized by day!

Accomplished so far:
- sourced a rhinestone vendor, and another one for sequins and glitter
- started the designs for 4 hairpieces
- knit some more sock (didn't measure, but somewhere between 5 and 5.5 repeats)
- made a homemade sock blocker out of galvanized wire
- washed first sock and pinned out (on sock blocker) to dry. Again, photos after Xmas...
- cleaned out car!!! (ahem, not including trunk ...)
- transferred some to-do items to Thom -- he's going to get windshield wiper fluid, and buy some nuts for gifts and party snacks, and will call his family to find out what food to bring for dinner
- figured out what to bring to one Xmas celebration (a bottle of white wine and some nuts -- the food item, not the family members -- not the labor intensive carrot and zucchini salad that was requested...)

Things to do today:
- Work real job, drive to coaching job, coach until 8:30, and then design hairpieces with head coach. Home by 10:00??
- Finish up through 6.5 pattern repeats of sock (total length: 7.5 repeats, then a toe!)
- gather canned goods for charity collection at office xmas party #2

Wednesday:
- work full time job
- finish hairpiece mockups. This is a 4-step process -- design concept, create white paper mockup, create colored paper mockup, create craft foam mockup. It sounds excessive, but it's the only way I've found to get the size and shape just right without wasting a lot of craft foam in the process!
- finish suit design layouts -- i.e. decide which sequins, rhinestones, etc. in what designs, for each suit
- finish knitting sock!!!
- buy gift for boss
- buy First Night buttons for niece's Christmas gift (at lunch)

Thursday
- work full time job, drive to coaching job, coach until 8:30pm
- review hairpiece mockups with head coach. Hopefully home by 10:00pm.
- block sock #2
- write letter of recommendation (for swimmer applying to private high school) at lunch
- if not yet insane, consider knitting a small bag for boss' gift. (perhaps using one of these skeins?

Six more days

Christmas is in six more days. Luckily, I have only one gift left to finish knitting. The gift has yet to make an appearance on the blog. The recipient knows about the blog's existance, so I won't be posting a photo until it has been gifted.

I will tell you that this gift is a pair of socks. One sock is done, and the other is complete through the gusset, so I just have to knit the rest of the foot and the toe. I estimate that it should take about 4 more hours to knit, based on my rate of knitting so far, assuming no stupid moments or late-night frogging.

Then, I need to rig up a homemade sock blocker and block them. So, I'd like to finish the knitting on Wednesday, block on Thursday, and wrap Friday night, as we will be leaving the house to travel on Saturday morning.

But, here is the rest of what I have to do between now and Christmas ...

  • Work full time job all day Mon-Thurs, and a half day on Friday.

  • Coach three practices, for a total of 8 hours.

  • Drive to and from said practices, for a total of 4.5 hours.

  • Drive to and from work, for another 5.5 hours, not counting driving in this morning.

  • Design 3 or 4 hairpieces so I can show my fellow coaches before we break for the holidays. Each one takes about an hour to design...

  • Make a list of rhinestones, sequins, glitter, and other materials needed for synchro costumes and hairpieces. Source vendors. Buy said rhinestones, sequins, glitter, and other materials so that they can get delivered between Christmas and New Year's, so I can sew one sample suit for each of 3 teams and 3 duets or trios before New Year's!

  • Buy a gift for charity, to be collected at my office's holiday party on Wednesday. Update! A helpful colleague just informed me that I can make a cash donation. That saves one trip to the holiday crazy stores!

  • Buy a gift for boss, to be given on Friday morning. (Ahem. I'm also thinking of making a Bamboozelle to package the gift. Am I nuts?)

  • Wrap gifts for 4 parents, 2 nieces, 1 boss, 1 charity.

  • Find a Salvation Army or Planet Aid drop box to get rid of the three bags of clothing that have been hanging out in my trunk since Thanksgiving.

  • Get windshield wiper fluid for my car.

  • Find out what food items to bring to 3 different family Christmas celebrations.

  • Buy/cook/bake/make said food items to bring to 3 different family Christmas celebrations.

  • Figure out what knitting to bring while travelling to and from above mentioned family Christmas celebrations.

  • Do laundry. Lots of it!

  • Pack for the whirlwind tour of 3 family Christmas celebrations.

So, why am I wasting time blogging?????

Awwww....

I was all ready to write a post about the socks I am currently knitting. I took a photo and everything. But, then I visited my friend Tracie and her new baby Jared. The baby was asleep when I got there, but this is what I saw when I peeked into the crib ...

Eight pounds of sweet smelling little baby, wrapped in the blanket I made for him. Tracie says it's their favorite blanket. It's just the right size to wrap him up in, and it has received lots of compliments from family and friends.

Awww. Socks just can't compete with that.

Preemie hats

Last month, I made a few preemie hats for the Knit Unto Others knit along. Due to travel, both at Thanksgiving and during the following weekend, and some technical glitches relating to my computer upgrade, I haven't posted any FO photos.

So, I now present to you, 3 hats for preemies, shown with a quarter for scale. And the leftover yarn.
DSCN0851-2

I'm going to give these to Risa to donate to the ICU where her cutie pie twins were born.

And, just in case you were curious as to what I used to pose these hats for their photo shoot, I present to you, "Hats on Fruit"... apparently, a preemie's head is about the size of an orange.
DSCN0852-2

Project Specs:

Pattern: Just a basic hat pattern. I referred to this one and some others for an idea about size, but just made up my own to fit my gauge.

Yarn: now discontinued Sandnes Garn "Mandarin Petit", variegated colorway 5200. All 3 hats from 1 ball, plus the leftovers in the left of the photo.

Gauge: 7 sts/in

Needles: Addi Turbos, size 4, I think. Magic Loop technique.

Synchronized Knitting

Thanks to the goddesses of tech support at work, I now have a graphics editing program on my computer again. Now that I can post photos, I'm back!

Last weekend, I went to the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center for a synchronized swimming "Coaches' College." They kept me pretty busy, so I only remembered to take one photo as I was leaving. This is the view of the mountains from the Athletes' Center.
DSCN0848-2

While en route to Colorado, I started my "Esther Williams" hat for Laura's synchronized knitalong. This is how far I got while travelling.
DSCN0853-2

I decided to make this hat with some stash yarn to donate to charity. I took out a few pattern repeats to make a kids' size. Unfortunately, I forgot to start the crown decreases sooner! That's ok though, as I can just omit the edging if the hat comes out too long.

I'd better get moving soon, as I'm supposed to finish this up by Friday!!

Filler

The lovely tech people at work upgraded my Mac recently. Somehow, this caused my freebie graphics editing program to disappear. I have to speak to them about getting it back, or getting something else, since the software I was using now costs $30. I have software at home too, but Thom has been using the computer a lot for school, so I've been uploading most pix from work.

So, that's a long excuse for why no recent updates. I have a bunch of stuff going on, but it's boring without pix, so I'm going to hold off on that post for now.

In the meantime, here's my "princess profile", just to amuse you... this is pretty accurate, especially the "just and fair" and "perfectionist" parts!

HASH(0x8d36e60)
The Noble Princess

You are just and fair, a perfectionist with a
strong sense of proper decorum. You are very
attracted to chivalry, ceremony and dignity.
For the most part you are rather sensible, but
you are also very idealistic.

Role Models: Guinevere, Princess Fiona (of Shrek)

You are most likely to: Get kidnapped by a stray
dragon.

Baby K #2 is here!

So, Samuel William K. joined us yesterday evening. Rumor has it, his new knit blankie came to the hospital with mom and dad... No photos yet, but we hear that all is well.

Baby K #1 is here!

Tracie and Chris had their baby last Wednesday! Jared William K. is here and looking pretty darn cute.

DSC01962

As you might remember, this is the baby for whom this blanket was knit ...

DSCN0689-2

We are still waiting to hear about Baby K #2 (a different K family!). He is scheduled to make his entry into the world today, via induced labor. Baby K #2 gets this blanket ...

DSCN0783-2

Hopefully, we will hear some news from K family #2 sometime soon!

And yes, there will be (new) knitting content soon, as soon as I take some photos...

Monday, December 05, 2005

Perhaps I failed to mention...

... that there was some stash enhancement at Thanksgiving.

DSCN0825-2

Ahem. That's some Artyarns Ultramerino 4 in a lovely solid or near-solid teal colorway. During the holiday weekend, I spent some time at Webs with Mim (my M-I-L), niece Jane, and husband's aunt and cousin. I'm reasonably impressed that this is all I purchased! I do have plans for this yarn, but I am not ready to reveal them just yet :)

After yarn shopping, we ate at a Tibetan restaurant in Northampton recommended by The Mafia. Here is Jane, waiting to be seated. Notice the knitting in her hands. We've created a monster. She even picked out a new kids knitting book at Webs, which "Santa" will bring her for Christmas.
DSCN0821-2

I've been busy, busy, busy for the past week. Tomorrow, I hope to post some updates of actual WIPs, of which I have many. Stay tuned...
