contest, with knitterly prizes!
Have I complained incessantly about mentioned that I have gone back to graduate school?
Right now, I am taking a required course on research methods and analysis. As part of the course, students are asked to design and execute a research study. My group -- we all in the higher education administration program -- is surveying college alumni about student satisfaction with the undergraduate experience.
We have put together a short online survey, and need to find participants. The survey only takes about 6-7 minutes to complete. I'm hoping that many of you would be willing to help. Click here to take the survey!!
As an added incentive, I will be giving away a knitting-related prize to a randomly selected survey-taker. The survey is anonymous. So, if you take it, leave me a comment on this post, and let me know that you completed it (on the honor system, of course!). I'll pick a name at random from everyone who commented.
One catch -- we are surveying graduates of four-year colleges in the United States. So, if you don't have a degree from a four-year college in the US, then you are not eligible for the survey. But, if you leave a comment and tell me that if you had been eligible, you would have taken the survey, then I will include your name in the prize drawing anyways :)
Once I pick a winner, I'll pick a prize that I think the winner would like.
Click here to take the survey!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help!

Heh...always happy to harp on what a crappy college experience I had. ;) Survey done.
By Anonymous, at 11:52 AM
Survey completed. Good luck with the project!
By Anonymous, at 12:03 PM
Well I'll have to let the cat-out-of-the-bag and tell you I don't qualify to take the survey. But I really would have taken it if I had that degree. Really.
By Rhonda the Stitchingnut, at 12:08 PM
I took it too- You and Mason Dixon published contest posts at almost the same time!
Why do I feel like I know Brad Peloquin?
By Erin, at 12:14 PM
I took it. Not sure the parent part was that relevant to my non-traditional student self, since I wasn't living with my parents or getting any support from them...
By Chris, at 12:29 PM
I completed the survey and I was completely honest.

Hi, I took your survey. As a fellow grad student i empathize with getting surveys back. Electronic surveys are a godsend!
good luck!

I took the survey too. It was hard to generalize about professors and classes. Some were terrific and the subjects fascinating. Some were downright awful and the professors were lame. Good luck with your class.
By Kathy, at 1:44 PM
How can I resist helping a fellow alumna? I took the survey.
By Katie, at 2:15 PM
Took it. Hard to remember, but I took it.
Also, I go away for a month and you and Mafia become really competent spinners. Sheesh. Such aptitude! Lovely work.

I completed the survey.
By Bostonworkerbee, at 4:21 PM
I was about to take it but then read the part about having to have graduated etc. Unfortunately I did not, but I was ready to jump right in and take it to help you out!
By Anonymous, at 5:48 PM
Sadly, I ran out of college money and went to massage school instead. I would've totally taken your survey!
Someday I hope to be able to take it.
By 5elementknitr, at 6:39 PM
i took your survey.
By maryse, at 10:16 PM
I took it! Hope there's an A in it for you!
By haddy, at 10:18 PM
I completed the survey. It was interesting thinking back about college. I had trouble deciding on some of the answers. Good luck with the project!
By Anonymous, at 12:05 AM
I took the survey. Great job coming up with questions. I was amazed, and even though I know that after an experience like college, we remember the good times, I was still amazed that I couldn't remember any of the bad details that I'm sure I complained about...
By Aunti Em, at 8:26 AM
Took the survey. :) It's amazing how some of the details have faded over the years...and it hasn't been THAT long. :)
By Throws Like A Girl, at 8:38 AM
I took the survey. I was a duffus and made the mistake of not thoroughly reading the top. I was applying all the pages to the teachers. Fortunately I was able to go back and correct the other pages before I completed the survey. The funny thing was most of the answers didn't change. It looks like the answers would generally reflect a person's general outlook on the world. Very interesting word choices.
By Ewe-niss, at 9:05 AM
Took the survey.
Now, I think I will be having flashbacks...
By sheep#100, at 9:08 AM
I took the survey. Interesting to think about those specific areas. I wonder what the results will look like in the different regions.
By Amy, at 9:27 AM
I took the survey! I hope it helps.
By bellamoden, at 9:36 AM
Did the survey! Hope school is great for you. I enjoyed grad school much more than undergrad. :-)
By Karen, at 9:37 AM
I took the survey too. Had to stretch my memory back thirty years. And it made me realize how little impact any of the administration had on me during college.
By Anonymous, at 9:40 AM
I just finished the survey... because it was so many years ago I had to really wrack my brains for some of the answers. I also realized that much of my time was spent dawdling or working rather than studying or surrounding myself with mentally stimulating people. Good luck with your survey and in categorizing the resulting data into something useful!
By Heide, at 9:45 AM
I did it.
By Marcia, at 9:55 AM
I did it too! Fun to think back on those years.

By Gina-Louise, at 11:03 AM
survey completed!
By Turtle, at 11:17 AM
Completed it. I attended three different universities, though - two public, one private, and one of the three in another country. I answered based on experiences at the one I graduated from.
By Mel, at 11:33 AM
I took the survey. I wasn't sure how to answer the admin. one. I've received a lot of help from the staff, but the admins seem to be a mixed bag of some good some bad.
By Carrie, at 11:54 AM
Hi, I completed the survey!
By Elisabeth, at 12:24 PM
I love surveys and knitting prizes! Coune me in!
By Anonymous, at 12:36 PM
Talk about time travel. That was a long time ago. But, like you, I am slogging through a graduate program now. Why, I ask myself daily, why?
Anyway I took your survey. Good luck in your studies.
By Anonymous, at 12:44 PM
I took the survey. I didn't have the best educational experience, but I work in research at a university, so thought it would be nice to help you out. :)
By Anonymous, at 1:11 PM
I would've taken the survey, but I'm not eligible :(
By Anonymous, at 1:23 PM
Interesting survey...though I feel like there should have been a way to indicate degrees to which you felt the adjectives applied...but i took it! it would be cool to win! :-)

By Berry Gal, at 1:46 PM
Took the survey; as the child of two academic types, I'm always willing to help those in the academic world.
By BJ, at 3:42 PM
Hi, I took the survey. I think I may be starting to forget anything I disliked about my undergraduate experience! I can only seem to recall brilliant professors and stimulating discussions!
By con il formaggio, at 4:45 PM
Took the survey!
I agree with others - the level of granularity was not enough for me - many of my answers seem contradictory, because the honest answer was "some were X some were Y". In most cases I based it on a "the majority were..." basis
By Siercia, at 4:45 PM
I took the survey. Most of the answers about other students were pretty mixed because I was around pre-med students in many of my science classes who were very driven while most students in other classes, jobs, dorm, band/choir, etc were much more along for the ride.
By April, at 5:15 PM
I ended up giving answers all over the board for some of the questions. Some of the people I dealt with could be brilliant about one thing and a total rock about another.
By Anonymous, at 5:25 PM
Add me to the list - I agree that some of these were harder than others because of the variance between the engineering students I had class with, and the art school folks I lived with. Good luck!
By S, at 5:26 PM
I did the survey. College seems so long ago, though 11 years isn't that long! Good luck in grad school!
By Gretchen, at 5:31 PM
I had SOME college so I dont completely qualify. Does the college of hard knocks count?? If I fit in your dynamics, I would have participated. Oh well, I still qualify for the drawing so there is THAT perk!
Good luck in grad school!!!
By Lynn, at 5:36 PM
I took the survey and would like to comment on one aspect of it. A whole section is devoted to "your parents (or guardian)". Since I went to college in my 30s and had no parents or guardian, that entire section was irrelevant to me, but there was no way of skipping it or indicate that it was not appropriate. In the end, I clicked on the question marks for all the choices involved, probably not the best way to deal with it, but I couldn't think of anything else.
By Anonymous, at 5:38 PM
Interesting survey, I just finished it. I hope you get plenty of responses!
By Megan, at 5:46 PM
I would have taken it, 'cept I haven't finished my degree...am working SLOWLY toward it though.
As soon as we get my honey through her certificates I can go back in earnest, can't wait!

By Kim, at 6:53 PM
i did it! sounds like an interesting project - i'd like to pursue a phd in educational policy at some point...
By Anonymous, at 7:13 PM
Just took the survey...was actually quite difficult to remember any extracuricular activities. Hm. Anyhow - good luck in grad school - I quit after 5 years. ;)
By thursday, at 7:41 PM
I'm sympathetic to any grad student trying to get participants, so I feel bad that I can't help you out (I live in Canada). If you're doing any other studies and need people who don't necessarily live in the US, send me an email!
By Eve, at 9:24 PM
add me to the growing list of survey takers; my answers may be different than the norm because I went to a small women's college. (inter-tube water polo and the 'dive in' were two of my favorite extra-curricular activies - the "dive in" was a movie shown on the wall above the pool so we could all hang out in inner tubes and watch.)
By Anonymous, at 9:29 PM
Done. I liked my college experience fine, apparently. Maybe rose-colored glasses are something that gets handed out at your 20 year reunion.
By Ruth, at 9:49 PM
I'm in. Made me think too much of work, though...
By Anonymous, at 9:50 PM
well that was fun! i enjoyed college a lot and this brought me right back. thanks. :)

Took the survey. Thought it was a bit biased toward young adults fresh out of high school, I was a back-to-college type.
By drvja2000, at 10:24 PM
I took it! Geez, I'm so there if you dangle a knitting related prize.
By Emily, at 10:24 PM
Did it, done. It's been a while since I thought about my undergrad classes!
Good luck with it all.

I'd have taken your survey (and not just because of the lure of yarn!), but since I'm Canadian I don't want to skew your results. Best of luck with your research project!
By Anonymous, at 9:32 AM
I took the survey, I'm always glad to help someone in grad school.
I did find it interesting that you divided California into 2 areas, I always thought they were (and have lived in both) but haven't seen it divided that way before.
By Anonymous, at 9:35 AM
just finished taking your survey. Would be interesting to see the results ;)
By Bee, at 9:55 AM
Sent by Chris to take your survey - good luck! I had to take research in grad school and I hated it!

Just finished the survey! Good luck in grad school.
By Anonymous, at 11:22 AM
I based my answers on my second undergrad degree. (Yes, I'm a masochist.) The answers would have been quite different for my first, despite being at the same university for both! I fit into one school much better than the other. --Karen, BA and BSME

By Anonymous, at 2:48 PM
just finished it...:-)i hope you get the findings you are looking for.
By Victoria, at 3:15 PM
I took it. The questions were quite provocative. All I really remember about my collegiate experience was that I was busybusybusy from the moment I touched down on campus until the day I graduated and collapsed on the sofa to sleep for four days straight. That, and meeting some cool people I wish I'd had time to get to know better.
By Jeanne, at 3:18 PM
I took your survey!
It was hard to remember...both because it was that long ago and because I went straight on to grad school myself. I had to keep separating my meories!
By Kathleen C., at 3:21 PM
done! gotta love Survey Monkey. :)

Good luck on your project.

I filled out the survey. I graduated a long time ago - 1978...
By Joan K, at 1:49 AM
I just finished your survey. It was fun to remember how happy I was with my college days, all those years ago.
I spent 3 weeks at BU, about 3 years ago, on an NEH program, and fell in love with the campus and city. It was your afiliation with BU that convinced me to take the survey.
By Christine, at 3:59 AM

By Anonymous, at 7:27 AM
I found you by way of Stumbling over Chaos. I did a 4 year degree, but in Canada, so I can't help you. Sorry. I know it can be a real pain to get people to participate in these things.
By Carol, at 3:57 PM
Just tried and it said the survey isn't available. Did you get enough or is the page broken?
By Anonymous, at 4:15 PM
Oh man... too late. The survey isn't available anymore. :o(
If it's a glitch and you still need people, let me know. :)
By Kel, at 7:20 PM
I tried too...but I guess you might've gotten all you need....good luck! :)
By V, at 7:51 AM
I would have taken the survey had I not been off on vacation, does that count?
