damn it ...

So, remember that house that we were buying? We're not buying it anymore.

We found out that the house has asbestos in the attic insulation. The owners refuse to do anything about it, and also refuse to lower the price of the house. Thom and I decided to walk away from it -- the asbestos removal and reinsulation would be a $10,000 job, maybe $8,000 if we do the reinsulation ourselves. And leaving the asbestos there is just not an option, although the homeowners think it is.

So, we are back to square one, and have started looking at other houses. Wish us luck!

Edited to add:
Double damn it! We looked at another house that we liked this weekend, and were going back to see again it tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, someone else just made an offer on it, so now it's also off the list.

This is getting stressful. It was OK until last week, but now it feels like the fates are conspiring against us. I just need to keep rreminding myself that we are in a buyer's market, and that we WILL find something we like.

Thank you all for your comments. It's nice to open my email and have little notes of encouragement.

  • Rats, sorry to hear the news. But it's better to find a house you feel good about than wondering about the long term effects of asbestos.

  • So sorry. You've been working so hard for this, the perfect house (sans health hazards) is surely right around the corner.

  • that's awful! i hope you are able to find somewhere else quickly and relatively painlessly!

  • Oh man, that's too bad. You made the right decision though and luckily, it seems to be a buyer's market so hopefully it won't take too long to find something even better.

  • i agree with stacy. it's a buyer's market nowadays and this just means that the perfect house for you is right around the corner! and.. i can't believe that the owners think that asbestos is ok to have in a house! what a bunch of morons. be thankful that you had a great inspector who found that out before it was too late.

  • That stinks, but it is the right decision. Good luck with the continuing house hunt!

  • Too bad. That really sucks. Maybe by walking away they will change their minds or you will find something even more fabulous.

  • Sorry it didn't work out, but better to find out now then down the road when it's too late and you have to have it removed at your expense.

I'm sure you'll find something even nicer. It's a semi buyer's market out there right now. Well at least in my area, hopefully in yours too.

  • I'm sorry to hear that. You will find something perfect soon, I'm sure. :)

  • I believe this has happened because there is a better yarn storage unit out there just waiting for you to find it :)

Here's hoping you find it soon.

  • YUCK! You are right, this is definitely a buyers' market. An "oh so much better" house will come your way, hopefully soon!

  • Aw, drat. Double drat.

Those buyers are idiots if they think that in THIS MARKET they can sell a house w/asbestos in it (and they have to declare it now) at their current asking price. Don't be surprised if they end up coming back to you in a few weeks.

But by then, you'll have found a more perfect house. It's out there, Danielle. I promise.

  • Hang in there!! It's good you found that out before buying the house. I'm sure you'll find something else that you love!
